Key takeaways
- Different types of backlinks do different jobs; only a few move competitive rankings.
- Link value comes from real authority, placement and indexing, not Trust Flow or Spam Score.
- Foundation links build a natural base but rarely move a hard keyword alone.
- Guest posts and niche edits add contextual trust on real sites with traffic.
- PBN links, especially homepage links, deliver the most authority per link.
There are many types of backlinks, but only a few of them do the heavy lifting when a page needs to climb. The rest support the profile, make it look natural or help with trust, which matters, but will not push a money page from position fifteen to position three on their own.
We have built links since 2012 and we sort them by one question: what does this link actually do for rankings? This guide walks through each type in that order, and every one of them is available in our link building services.
For the basics first, read our complete guide to backlinks.
Three things that decide a backlink’s value
Before comparing link types, it helps to know what makes any single link strong or weak. In our experience it comes down to three things.
- The linking site’s real authority. Its own backlinks, its age and its clean history. Not Trust Flow, Citation Flow or Spam Score, which we find to be poor guides.
- Where the link sits. A link inside body text, surrounded by related words, carries more than a link in a profile or footer.
- Whether the page is indexed. If Google has not indexed the page, the link does nothing.
Every type of backlink below scores differently on those three points. That is what explains the gap between them.
Supporting types of backlinks
These links rarely move a competitive keyword by themselves. Their job is to give the domain a natural shape and a base of trust.
Profile and forum links
Accounts on forums and community sites with a link back to your site. They add referring domains and diversity. Many are nofollow, which is fine and normal.
Web 2.0 properties
Mini blogs on hosted platforms with short articles linking to you. They add contextual mentions at low cost.
Blog comments, bookmarks, PDFs and infographics
Small signals that round out a profile. On their own they are weak. Together they make the link graph look like a real business that people talk about.
We bundle all of these into our update-proof foundation backlinks: 230 manually built links with a natural dofollow and nofollow mix. It is the base layer we recommend for new sites and for any site with a thin profile.
Contextual links on real sites
This is where rankings start to move. A contextual link sits inside an article, next to text about the same subject, on a site that real people visit.
Guest posts
A new handwritten article on a real site, written around your topic, with your link in the body. You get full control of the context. The trade off is that the page is new and has to be crawled and indexed before it counts.
Niche edits
Your link added to an article that already exists, is aged and is indexed. You control less of the text, but the page has a track record and its own authority from day one.
Both types work well for money pages and topical pages. Our guest posts and niche edits use sites with Moz DA 20+, 100+ referring domains and 1,000+ monthly traffic.
PBN links: the heaviest single type

A private blog network is a group of sites built on aged expired domains that already have real backlinks. When you get a link from a quality PBN site, you get the authority that domain built over years.
That is why PBN links are the type we turn to when a keyword is hard. Our network has 10,000+ sites, each on an aged auction domain with real backlink history, hosted to avoid footprints, with every link inside a handwritten article. Risk comes from cheap, sloppy networks that reuse hosting and spin content. Ours are built to avoid exactly that.
Our PBN links guide explains how these networks work in more detail.
Homepage PBN links
A link on the homepage of a PBN site carries the most authority that site has to give. Homepage links are usually rented monthly so they stay in place while you renew.
Comparing the main types of backlinks
| Link type | Main job | Ranking impact | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation links | Natural base and diversity | Low alone, supports others | New sites, thin profiles |
| Guest posts | Topical trust and context | Medium | Money pages and blog content |
| Niche edits | Aged, indexed authority | Medium to high | Pages close to page one |
| PBN article links | Strong authority boost | High | Competitive keywords |
| Homepage PBN links | Maximum authority per link | Highest | The toughest terms |
Links that look useful but rarely help
Some links are sold widely but do little in practice.
- Sitewide footer links from unrelated sites. They inflate counts without adding context.
- Mass directory submissions to directories nobody visits.
- Links on unindexed pages, which is common with very cheap packages.
- Spun article networks that share hosting and templates, which leave obvious footprints.
None of these will get a site penalized on their own in most cases. They simply waste budget that could go to links that move rankings.
Matching link types to the goal
A quick way to choose is to start with what you need the link to do.
- Get a new domain trusted and crawled: foundation links first.
- Rank a blog guide or service page in a moderate niche: guest posts and niche edits.
- Break into the top three for a hard commercial term: PBN article links, then homepage links if needed.
- Revive an older site that has stalled: niche edits on aged pages plus a few strong PBN links to the pages that slipped.
- Resell links to clients as an agency: any of the above with unbranded reports.
Most sites need more than one of these at different times, which is why a plan usually changes as rankings improve.
How we combine link types in a campaign
Real profiles have a mix. A site with only PBN links or only directories looks odd. A campaign that works usually stacks the layers:
- A foundation package to build a broad, natural base.
- Guest posts and niche edits for contextual trust on key pages.
- PBN links aimed at the money pages that need the biggest push.
- Ongoing links each month so growth looks steady.
The balance depends on competition. A local plumber may need mostly foundation and contextual links. An affiliate site in a hard niche will lean on PBN power.
FAQ
Do nofollow links have any value?
They pass little direct authority but make a profile look natural and can send traffic. A profile with zero nofollow links looks built, not earned.
Which type of backlink is safest for a brand new site?
Start with foundation links and a few contextual placements, then add stronger links as the site ages. Jumping straight to heavy authority on a week old domain looks unnatural.
Are edu and gov links a separate type worth chasing?
They are just links on certain domains. They can be strong, but many sold as edu links sit on unindexed student pages, so judge them by the same three factors as any other link.
